this article describes the contingency Stock Levels for Well Control.
Contingency Fluid
Requirement for contingency fluid for onshore operations depends on proximity of supply base.
For offshore operations, in order to sustain control in case of severe losses, sufficient contingency fluid stock has to be kept on site. A minimum stock of contingency fluids (excluding active and reserve) of 500 bbls must be maintained on the rig at all times.
Drilling Fluid (active & reserve)
The active volume should be maintained at a level consistent with good drilling practices taking into account kick detection, safety and economic factors. Under normal operating conditions, the minimum surface volume (active & reserve) of drilling fluid of the same parameters as that in use shall be 50% of the empty hole volume, subject to a minimum surface volume of 300 bbls.
In the event of major total losses, maintaining this level of drilling fluid stocks may not be possible. However, this level should be re-built as soon as possible after the hole condition stabilises.
Weighting Material
For Development and Appraisal wells that are not expected to penetrate over-pressured formations, sufficient weighting material shall be kept on site to permit an increase of 1 ppg to the gradient of the drilling fluid in the active system (surface and down hole) with a minimum of 70 tons for offshore and 10 tons for onshore operations.
Drilling Fluid Chemicals
Minimum stock levels shall be maintained at the well site such that it is possible to prepare sufficient new drilling fluid equivalent to the empty hole volume plus 300 bbls.
Cement
Sufficient cement quantities should be retained on location to permit a minimum of 3 x 500 ft cement plugs to be set in open hole.
LCM
Sufficient LCM to mix up 300 bbls of LCM pills shall be available on site.
