This article describes the general handling and running guidelines for Measurement While Drilling (MWD)

Handling Guidelines for Measurement While Drilling (MWD) tools

Considerable care should be taken whenever handling MWD tools. They are built to withstand high axial loads but are easily damaged by transverse loading. MWD collars should always be snubbed when being handled out of transport cradles.

  • the fishing neck of the Measurement While Drilling (MWD) tool must be measured because it might have a different diameter from the drill collar string.
  • steel components shall not be included within the NMDC string. Note: If stabilisation is required, NM stabilisers should be used.
  • mud filter screens should be installed in the surface equipment rather than in the top DP single (this is safer for personnel to install and clean)
  • When the Measurement While Drilling (MWD) tools fails, it is normally acceptable to drill a further 350 ft from the last survey station before POOH. Note: This should be confirmed with the Drilling Supervisor prior to implementation
