Casing Types

The purpose of the surface string is to provides blowout protection during drilling. Setting depth is often chosen to isolate troublesome formations, loss zones, shallow hydrocarbons, water sands, or protects the build-up section of deviated wells.

The Production string is a string which is installed to separate productive zones from other reservoir formations or for testing purposes. The string through which the well will be completed, produced and controlled Used with or without a packer or flow tubing and inside which product flows. In most cases, the production casing will serve Production string

A liner (other than slotted liners) is a string of casing which does not extend all the way to the surface. Liners are installed to permit deeper drilling, to separate the productive zones from the other reservoir formations or for testing purposes. Usually cemented up to the top of the liner. Usually cemented over its Liner

The purpose of Stove pipe, marine conductor or foundation pile is to: – protect the incompetent surface soils from erosion by the drilling fluid. – reduce the wave and current loads imposed on the inner strings. – may be used to install a full mud circulation system. – guide the drillstring and subsequent casing into Stove pipe, marine conductor or foundation pile

The intermediate string is a string which is used to isolate weak formations, to case off loss zones, sloughing, caving and reservoir formations. Such strings are also set in transition zones to abnormal formation pressure to provide blowout protection by upgrading the strength of the well. Cement fill is required to shut off hydrocarbon zones Intermediate string

Conductor string is a string which is installed to cover unconsolidated formations, to seal off shallow water sands and to provide protection against shallow gas flows. The string is cemented to the surface or sea bed if possible, and is always the first string onto which one or more BOPs are installed. prevent poorly consolidated Conductor string

This article presents the definition of the various casing types: conductor, surface casing, intermediate casing, production casing and liner. Marine Conductor (Offshore) This is for offshore drilling operations from jack-up rigs. It consists of a pipe driven, jetted, or cemented in a pre-drilled hole to provide structural strength, to cover very soft formations below the Casing types definitions
